Newsletter 09.01.2019: new procedure work permits

The procedure has been changed to obtain a work permit for employment of more than 90 days in Belgium. In the past foreigners, who wanted to work in Belgium, needed to complete 3 seperate procedures to legally work and reside in Belgium (1. obtaining a work permit, 2. obtaining a visa, 3. obtaining a Belgian residence permit). As of January 1, 2019 a combined permit must be applied for. The permit contains an electronic residence card with both admission to work and admission to reside in Belgium.

The combined permit applies to an application for residence and employment that lasts longer than 90 days. This permit is issued by the Immigration Office. No separate paper work permit will be delivered anymore. An application must be submitted to the central regional migration service.

For residence and employment with a maximum of 90 days, the old procedure remains valid and paper work permits are still issued, unless the person concerned is exempt from the work permit.

Already issued work permits remain valid. When the permit needs to be renewed, the new combined procedure must be followed.
